People say 'Well, you shouldn't care what people think of you.' Well, yeah, of course you should. Psychopaths don't care what people think of them. Now, you shouldn't care so much what people think about you that you're willing to lie to maintain whatever it is that you think they value. There are places beyond which that becomes counterproductive, clearly.
